What We'd Do in the First 30 Days With Your Website | From the Lab

    TL;DR

Every engagement starts the same way: we look at everything before we touch anything. The first 30 days aren't about quick fixes or flashy wins — they're about understanding your site's current reality, identifying where the real opportunities are, fixing the foundational issues that are holding you back, and building a roadmap that turns monthly effort into compounding growth. We're laying out the entire process here because we think you deserve to know exactly what you're getting before you sign anything. This is the playbook.

    Key Takeaways:

    • The first 30 days are diagnostic — we don't change anything until we understand everything
    • A full technical audit comes before any content or keyword strategy
    • Quick wins exist and we pursue them, but they're not the whole plan
    • The 30-day output is a roadmap, not a report that collects dust
    • Transparency about the process is the point — no black boxes

    Previously in From the Lab...

Series Intro — We launched this series to share what we see on the front lines — real problems, real solutions, no jargon. Start here if you're picking up the series for the first time.

Part 1 — "Is Google Even Seeing Your Website?" — We dug into the most fundamental SEO problem: pages that are crawled but never indexed. We shared how over 80% of one site's pages were invisible to Google and walked through how to check your own status in five minutes.

Part 2 — "Your Website Looks Great. Here's Why It's Not Ranking." — We broke down the six hidden gaps between a website built for aesthetics and one built for search — thin content, missing headings, no structured data, poor internal linking, and speed problems hiding behind beautiful design.

Part 3 — "What Your Google Search Console Is Trying to Tell You" — We walked through the most powerful free SEO tool available, covering how to read queries, impressions, CTR, and position data like a strategist.

Part 4 — "The Real Cost of Cheap SEO" — We exposed the five most common damage patterns from cut-rate SEO providers — spammy backlinks, junk content, duplicate meta tags, keyword stuffing, and zero reporting — and did the math on why the cheap option often costs more.

Part 5 — "AI Won't Save Your Marketing. Here's What Will." — We separated AI hype from AI reality, breaking down what AI tools actually do well in marketing, where they fall flat, and why consistency, data, and genuine expertise still drive results more than any tool.

    Why We're Showing You This

Most agencies guard their process like a trade secret. We get it — if you show someone exactly what you do, they could theoretically do it themselves.

We're showing you anyway. For two reasons.

First, because transparency builds trust. If you're considering working with us, you should know exactly what the first month looks like. No surprises, no vague "we'll get to work on things." A clear process with clear milestones.

Second, because the process isn't the hard part. Knowing what to do is one thing. Having the tools, experience, and time to actually do it — and do it well — is another. A business owner could read this post and attempt every step themselves. Some will. And the ones who try will quickly understand why agencies exist.

So here's the whole thing. Unedited. Step by step.

    Week 1: The Diagnostic

We don't touch anything in week one. We just look.

Google Search Console deep dive. This is always first. We covered this extensively in Part 3, and it's the foundation of everything that follows. We pull 3-6 months of data (more if available) and analyze query performance, page performance, indexing status, device splits, and geographic data. We're looking for patterns: which pages are earning impressions, which queries you're competing for, where clicks are happening vs. where they're not, and whether indexing issues are limiting your visibility.

Technical site audit. We crawl your entire site programmatically, checking every page for indexing status, page speed, mobile usability, heading structure, meta tags, structured data, internal linking patterns, broken links, redirect chains, and crawl errors. This is where we find the problems we described in Part 1 and Part 2 — pages Google can't index, content gaps, structural issues that are silently killing your rankings.

Backlink profile analysis. We pull your full backlink profile and evaluate it for quality. Are the links from relevant, authoritative sites? Or are there toxic links that could be hurting you? If the previous provider left damage behind — the kind we described in Part 4 — this is where we find it.

Competitive analysis. We identify who's actually ranking for the keywords that matter to your business and analyze what they're doing. What content do they have that you don't? Where is their site technically stronger? What link profile are they building? This isn't about copying competitors — it's about understanding the bar you need to clear to compete.

Content audit. We review every page on your site for content quality, relevance, and SEO alignment. Is the content thin? Is it keyword-stuffed? Is it duplicated? Is there content that's helping your rankings and content that's dragging them down? This audit tells us what to keep, what to improve, and what to remove.

By the end of week one, we know exactly what we're working with. No assumptions. No guesses. Data.

    Week 2: The Quick Wins

While the deeper strategy work takes time, there are almost always things we can fix immediately that produce results faster than anything else.

Title tag and meta description rewrites. If your pages have generic, duplicate, or missing title tags and meta descriptions, we rewrite them all. Every page gets a unique, keyword-relevant title tag and a compelling meta description. This is one of the fastest ways to improve click-through rates for queries you're already ranking for. Sometimes we see CTR improve within days of the changes being indexed.

Indexing fixes. If the audit revealed pages that should be indexed but aren't, we start fixing the underlying issues immediately — whether that's rendering problems, thin content, or sitemap issues. We submit priority pages for re-indexing through Search Console and begin monitoring the response. As we showed in Part 1, getting your pages properly indexed is the single highest-impact fix in SEO.

Critical technical fixes. Broken links, redirect chains, missing alt text, crawl errors — anything that's actively harming your site's health gets addressed now. These aren't glamorous fixes. They're housekeeping. But Google notices when a site cleans up its technical debt.

Structured data implementation. If your site has no structured data (and most don't, as we covered in Part 2), we begin implementing it on your most important pages. Local business schema, breadcrumbs, FAQ schema, review schema — whatever's relevant to your business. This gives Google explicit context about your content and can enable rich results in search.

Internal linking improvements. We identify orphan pages and key pages with weak internal linking and begin building connections. A few strategic internal links can shift how Google understands and prioritizes your pages — especially for pages that are close to ranking but need a small push.

These quick wins aren't the whole strategy. But they create visible momentum while we build the longer-term plan.

    Week 3: The Strategy Build

This is where the first two weeks of data come together into a plan.

Keyword strategy. Based on Search Console data, competitive analysis, and your business goals, we build a keyword map — which pages target which keywords, where the gaps are, and what new content needs to be created. This isn't a list of 500 keywords thrown at a wall. It's a focused strategy that aligns your pages with the queries that matter most to your business. We use AI-assisted analysis to identify opportunities faster, but the strategic decisions are human.

Content roadmap. We map out what content needs to be created, updated, or removed over the next 3-6 months. This includes blog posts, service pages, landing pages, and any other content types relevant to your market. Every piece of planned content is tied to a specific keyword opportunity and a specific business goal. No content for content's sake.

Technical improvement plan. Beyond the quick fixes, we outline any larger technical projects that need to happen — site speed optimization, mobile experience improvements, architecture changes, or platform-level issues. These get prioritized based on impact and feasibility.

Link building strategy. If your backlink profile needs strengthening (and it almost always does for local businesses), we outline an approach focused on real links from real sources — local business associations, industry directories, partnership opportunities, content-driven link earning. No spam. No shortcuts. The approach that holds up long term.

Monthly rhythm. We define what the ongoing monthly SEO cadence will look like — what gets reviewed weekly, what gets optimized monthly, how reporting works, and how we communicate. Predictability matters. You should know exactly what's happening and when.

Week 4: The Roadmap Delivery and Kickoff

At the end of the first 30 days, we sit down with you (virtually or in person) and walk through everything.

Here's what we found. The full diagnostic results: technical issues, indexing status, content quality, backlink health, competitive positioning, and Search Console insights. No jargon — plain-English explanations of what each finding means for your business.

Here's what we already fixed. A summary of every quick win we implemented in week 2 and the early results (if any are visible yet). This shows immediate value and establishes momentum.

Here's the plan. The full 3-6 month roadmap: keyword targets, content calendar, technical improvements, link building approach, and monthly rhythm. Every element is prioritized by expected impact and connected to a business outcome.

Here's how we'll measure it. The specific metrics we'll track and report on monthly. Not vanity metrics — real indicators of progress. Impressions trending up means visibility is growing. Position improvements on target keywords mean the content strategy is working. Clicks increasing means the visibility is converting to traffic. Indexed page count climbing means Google is trusting the site more over time.

Here's what we need from you. We're honest about this: monthly SEO works best when the client is an active partner. We'll need access to accounts, timely feedback on content, and occasional input on business priorities. We do the heavy lifting, but your expertise about your own business makes the work better.

What Doesn't Happen in the First 30 Days

    Let's be upfront about expectations.

You probably won't see dramatic ranking improvements in month one. SEO isn't paid advertising — there's no switch to flip. What you will see is a clean foundation, a clear plan, and early momentum from the quick wins.

The real compounding effect starts in months 2-3 as the content strategy, technical improvements, and ongoing optimization start stacking. By month 4-6, most clients see meaningful movement in impressions and position for their target keywords. By month 6-12, the organic traffic pipeline starts becoming a reliable channel.

We set these expectations upfront because overpromising is one of the hallmarks of the cheap SEO providers we described earlier in this series. We'd rather tell you the truth about the timeline and overdeliver than promise page-one rankings in 30 days and underdeliver.

Why the First 30 Days Set the Tone

Every engagement we've run that produced strong long-term results had one thing in common: a thorough first month. The diagnostic phase isn't bureaucracy. It's the foundation that every subsequent month builds on.

When we skip steps or rush the diagnosis, we end up optimizing for the wrong keywords, fixing the wrong technical issues, or building content that doesn't align with real opportunity. When we do the first 30 days right, every month after that is focused, efficient, and building on solid ground.

That's why we invest so heavily in this phase. It's not the flashiest part of the work. It won't produce a case study in four weeks. But it's the reason month 6 and month 12 look so different from where we started.

    The Series in Perspective

Over the course of this series, we've covered the full spectrum of what it takes to build a digital presence that actually works.

We started with the most fundamental question — whether Google can even see your website. We moved into the gap between design and performance. We showed you how to read the data Google gives you for free. We exposed the real cost of cutting corners. We separated AI hype from AI reality. And now we've shown you exactly how we approach the first 30 days with a new client.

Every post was built to do two things: help you evaluate your own situation, and show you what working with us actually looks like. Not theory. Not buzzwords. The real work, explained in plain English.

    The Bottom Line

The first 30 days aren't about overnight transformation. They're about doing the work that makes everything after them effective. A thorough diagnostic, targeted quick wins, and a data-driven roadmap — that's what separates an agency that produces results from one that produces invoices.

If anything in this series made you look at your own digital presence differently — or made you question whether your current approach is actually working — that's the whole point. The information is here. The data is available. And if you want someone to walk through it with you, that's exactly what we do.
