The Blind Spot · AI search visibility by industryThe AI gap your industry cannot see.
When someone asks an assistant who to call, most local industries are invisible. We sampled the answers for twelve industries in twenty cities. Pick yours and see how often the answers name anyone at all, and who.
Pick a trade. See the gap.
The gap, trade by trade.
Share of AI answers that name any local business, across the sampled cities.
The method.
What customers actually ask
Forty questions per industry, written from search data and real chat logs. Who is the best, who is open now, who do you recommend.
The ones people use
The four major assistants, asked the same questions in the same week, from each city.
Named, cited, or silent
An answer counts when it names a local business. We record who, and which page it cites, if any.
Closing the gap is mostly pages.
A page that answers "who is the best roofer in Plano" plainly, with proof, gets cited. A keyword page does not.
Structured data, an llms.txt, clean HTML. The assistants prefer sources they can parse.
Assistants lean on rating and recency. So do people.
Name, address, hours and category must match across the web or you are two businesses.
Profile posts and FAQ pages the assistants can quote.
The crew samples the answers every week and reports the change.
The voice gap, explained.
Voice assistants and the one answer problem
Every day, homeowners ask voice assistants and AI chat for plumber and HVAC recommendations. 87% of voice queries return a single business. If your structured data, directory presence and entity authority are not in order, that business is not you.
72% of smart speaker owners search for local services weekly. Most home service companies are set up for one of the three main voice platforms at best.
Why AI assistants skip good businesses
AI assistants recommend businesses based on entity signals that most home service companies have never heard of: a clear name, category and location, structured data, and listings that match across the web. A well rated company can still be left out of the answer when those signals are missing or in conflict.
The fix that costs nothing
Structured data and directory presence cost nothing to put in place, yet they separate the visible from the invisible. Start there, then add pages that answer the questions customers actually ask.
We will show you where your business stands across Google, the AI assistants and the voice assistants in fifteen minutes.
The Blind Spot questions, answered.
What is the AI search blind spot?
The AI search blind spot is the gap between ranking on Google and being named when a customer asks an AI assistant who to call. A business can rank first for its core service and still be missing from the answer, because assistants lean on entity signals, structured data and citations. Most local industries are invisible in those answers today.
Is fixing an AI search blind spot the same as SEO?
It overlaps with SEO, but it is not the same job. The assistants read the same web as search engines, but they weigh clarity, reviews and consistency more than links. A page that plainly answers the question a customer asks, with proof, gets cited. A page written around a keyword usually does not.
How does The Blind Spot study measure AI answers by industry?
We sampled the answers for twelve industries in twenty cities. Each industry gets forty questions written from search data and real chat logs, such as who is the best, who is open now and who do you recommend. The four major assistants get the same questions in the same week from each city. An answer counts when it names a local business, and we record who and which page it cites.
Which AI assistants does The Blind Spot track?
The four major AI assistants, the ones people actually use. Each gets the same questions in the same week, asked from each of the twenty cities, and the study is re-sampled weekly. Client tracking also watches Google's AI Overviews, and new platforms are added once they reach meaningful query volume.
How can I check whether my business has an AI search blind spot?
Run a five prompt test. Ask a few AI assistants and Google's AI Mode to recommend a business in your category and city, phrased the way a customer would ask. If your name comes up in fewer than 3 of those 5 answers, you have an active blind spot. The free audit runs the check for you and shows which of your pages, if any, get cited.
Which industries have the biggest AI search blind spot?
Home services and restaurants are hit hardest by voice assistants, because a voice answer usually names a single business. Legal, healthcare and financial services feel Google's AI Overviews most, since Google leans on AI summaries for those questions. Multi-location and franchise brands suffer most from split identities, when the assistants cannot tell which location is the real one.
Can Digital Ingenuity guarantee my business a mention in AI answers?
No. No one controls what an assistant says, and the answers change weekly. They are less stable than search rankings. What we can do is sample the answers every week and show your mentions moving, week by week, as your pages, reviews and listings improve.
How long does it take to close an AI search blind spot?
Cleanup of entity signals such as schema, knowledge graph details and directory consistency typically shows measurable citation lift within 30 to 60 days. Gains from new content follow over about 90 days. Full parity with the leaders in your category usually takes 4 to 6 months, depending on how hard your competitors push on their own AI visibility.
